What is the DDAP?

The Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP), formerly known as the Department of Health, was officially formed in Pennsylvania in July 2012. The goal of the DDAP is to provide education, intervention and treatment programs to reduce drug and alcohol abuse and dependency for residents in Pennsylvania. Their mission statement reads as follows “The Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs mission is to engage, coordinate and lead the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s effort to prevent and reduce drug, alcohol and gambling addiction and abuse; and to promote recovery, thereby reducing the human and economic impact of the disease.” As of September 2022, Acceptance House Sober Living is proud to be DDAP Licensed.

Why is being DDAP Licensed Important for Sober Living Housing?

In 2017, the DDAP announced it will accept recovery housing into their licensure program, which was previously reserved for drug & alcohol rehabilitation and treatment facilities exclusively. The licensure program for sober living houses helps men and women in recovery maintain sobriety by ensuring a network of safe drug and alcohol recovery houses across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Seeking treatment at a DDAP licensed recovery house ensures a safe & healthy living environment that is staffed with trained individuals and free of drugs and alcohol. An official accreditation holds recovery houses throughout the commonwealth to high standards set by the DDAP and in accordance with the law.

Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facility Accreditation

Recovery housing licensing comes with a strict set of rules, guidelines and provisions that must be followed. These are designed to protect residents in health & safety, finances and residential rights. Some of the provisions you can expect when living in our sober living homes include:

• Staff members trained to administer naloxone, CPR and first aid. Naloxone is always on the property.
• Emergency contact notification in the event of hospitalization, death or has not returned to the grounds within 12 hours of expected time.
• Criminal history/background check for staff and volunteers.
• Nondiscriminatory practices surrounding age, sex, race, ethnicity, religion, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation and other such factors.
• Establish written agreement before helping with residents’ funds.
• Documentation of all financial transactions between residents and housing facilities.
